Why Your Mouth Needs to Always Stay Moist

Posted on 1/15/2018 by ARCHPOINT
Dry Mouth ARCHPOINT TX 75231Regular drinking of water is a good thing, one that is encouraged by health experts. Most people know about the 2 liter daily requirement. Still, when you always feel the need to take a sip of water, it might be a sign of a much bigger problem.

A constant dry mouth is a serious issue in itself, but also one that might indicate a much bigger problem. It is important for the mouth to stay moist. Here is why

Saliva
Understanding the role of saliva is important in getting why the mouth should always remain dry. A dry mouth basically means low flow of saliva. Saliva acts as the body's natural mouthwash, protecting the teeth and the mouth from bacteria. Without it the teeth would be very susceptible to attacks by bacteria. Saliva also helps in tasting and swallowing food.

Dry mouth

If the mouth is dry, the ability of the teeth to protect themselves naturally is heavily hindered. But it is not just the mouth that suffers. The throat is also heavily affected.

Saliva helps push food down to the stomach and begins the digestion process. With a dry mouth, one begins to suffer symptoms like a sore throat, a hoarse voice and blocked nasal passage.

Apart from the mouth, throat and teeth the tongue will also be affected. Taste buds need moisture for proper functioning. They make it easier to taste and enjoy the food in the mouth. If a dry mouth persists, the taste buds start shutting down, resulting in a situation where one can neither taste nor swallow their food.

It is important to always keep the mouth moist by drinking lots of water, especially during the hot or cold seasons. If the problem occurs frequently or persists, it might be a sign of a deeper problem. Reach out to us today of you are suffering from any of these.
