Refined sugars are a common part of most of the foods people eat on a regular basis. This may taste good, but it can be a big problem for our teeth. When we eat refined sugars, they feed the bacteria that live and thrive in our mouths.
This causes them to produce acid, which then eats away at the enamel that protects and forms the outside of our teeth. Once the enamel is gone, cavities and decay follow.

Look through the things you eat on a regular basis and see which things contain sugar that you may not have thought of. You can make a conscious choice to stop eating donuts and frosted cereals, but when you do not realize that an item has sugar, it can be more difficult.
Look at things like coffee creamer, granola, yogurt, condiments, and the foods you like to snack on. Those with sugar should be decreased or replaced when possible.
What to Do When You Still Have Refined Sugars in Your Diet
When you still eat some refined sugars, such as cereal and ketchup, it is important to limit their quantity. It is also important to not eat them alone.
Eating these foods alone allows the sugar to sit in direct contact with the bacteria until the next time you eat or brush. If you eat them with other foods, it can decrease how much damage they can do to your teeth.
Refined sugars are something most of us can get out of our diets, but it is hard since they taste so good. In this case, just make sure you only have a little at a time. Sugars should not be a big part of your diet anyway. Just enjoy them now and again, and be sure to brush a little bit afterwards.
