Dentures – Not a Long-Term Procedure

Dentures at ARCHPOINTDentures are false teeth that can be used to replace some or all of your natural teeth. There are partial dentures that are anchored to a natural tooth on either side and then there are complete dentures that attach to the top and bottom of your mouth using special pastes. Traditional dentures are completely removable and are not attached to your gums in any way. They sit on top of the gums. There are also newer types of dentures called dental implants. With this procedure, you will have small titanium rods implanted into the jawbone. The dentures then attach to these implants. The implants are permanent, but the crowns come in both removable and permanent versions.

Many people are concerned that they will have a period in between tooth extraction and their dental surgery where they have no teeth at all. They are worried that even with temporary dentures, people will realize that they have lost all of their teeth. Fortunately, getting dentures isn’t a long-term procedure.

Consultations and Extractions

Going through the process of getting dentures does not take that long. First, you will come in, and we will discuss your options. If you are talking to us about dentures, chances are you have lost some teeth or have some teeth that need to be extracted. No matter what kind of dentures you are getting, you will have to have your teeth extracted first.

However, before that’s done, we will do a dental examination and determine what type of dentures will work for you. In many cases, All-on-4 dentures or dental implants will work, but there are some people who aren’t good candidates for implants for one reason or another.

No matter what type of dentures are right for you, the next step is to have a mold made. This way, we will be able to create a set of dentures that fit perfectly in your mouth. If your dentures are too large or too small, it can cause difficulty eating, discomfort, and other issues. In fact, sometimes we need to have you come back to take another impression made. It depends on if the first is usable or not. We want your dentures to fit perfectly the first time, so we want to take our time and get a good impression.

Once that is done, you will select the shade of your dentures. We will help you find one that looks right on you and matches your natural teeth. If you are getting implants, we will discuss where these implants should go. We will get photographs of your mouth, look at the shape of your teeth, and more. Then we will do the extraction if you are having teeth extracted.

Traditional Dentures

Following the extraction, you will try a wax denture to see if it fits and looks right. This way, we can make any adjustments that need to be done. Next, our lab will create your real dentures. This can take a few weeks, during which time you will have temporary dentures. Once your dentures are done, we will need to see you several more times to make sure they are perfect. All in all, the entire process from consultation to final visit usually takes no more than six months.

Dental Implants

If you are getting implants, they can be installed during the extraction procedure. You will leave our office with a brand-new smile! You will likely have a set of temporary teeth installed. These teeth are designed to heal more quickly. You will return in around three months to have your permanent teeth installed.
