Removable Implant Supported Dentures
When most people think of dentures, they think of the traditional removable false teeth. These dentures are secured to the top or bottom of the mouth by using a temporary fixative. At night, they are removed, cleaned, and stored in a special solution. While this type of dentures has worked for years, it does have some drawbacks. These fake teeth rarely feel natural, and it’s easy for someone else to tell that they are not real. It’s also possible for food particles to get stuck up underneath dentures, causing irritation and pain. If the fixative comes loose during the day, it can lead to a fairly embarrassing situation.
Dentures replace your missing teeth. These fake teeth do several things. First, they make it much easier to eat food. If you are missing several teeth in a row, it can be very hard to chew. Second, missing teeth affect your smile, which affects your self-confidence. You may stop smiling and even talk for fear of people making fun of your missing teeth. Dentures may not help, either. If you are always afraid of them falling out or think people notice that you have fake teeth, you might also be afraid of them making fun of you. While dentures certainly help, traditional fake teeth still make leave you self-conscious.
A Modern Alternative
Today, there’s another option. Removable implant-supported dentures are similar to dentures in that they are fake teeth that replace some of your missing natural teeth. However, instead of cementing them to the top of your mouth, they attach to titanium rods that are implanted in your jawbone. The dentures themselves attach to the implants, so you can take them in and out whenever you want.
The Benefits of Removable Implant-Supported Dentures over Traditional Dentures
There are some reasons removable implant-supported dentures are becoming much more popular than traditional dentures. They fit much better than traditional dentures, so there’s much less awkwardness. You also don’t have to worry as much about food getting down underneath them. The way these dentures connect to the implants is stronger and more reliable than the special temporary adhesive used with traditional dentures, too.
Removable implant-supported dentures often look more natural than traditional dentures, too. These dentures don’t cover as much of the upper part of your mouth as traditional dentures. Besides fitting and looking better, you may find that it’s easier to talk and make more natural-sounding with removable implant-supported dentures than with traditional dentures.
How Removable Implant-Supported Dentures Work
In many ways, removable implant-supported dentures and traditional dentures work in very similar ways. You still have to remove implant-supported dentures when you go to sleep at night, and you need to always clean them and your gums regularly. Because of this, some people prefer to get permanent implants if they are going to go through the surgery required to have implants put in.
