Pros and Cons of Snap-On Dentures

snap-on-dentures

When it comes to replacing missing teeth with implants or snap-on dentures, ARCHPOINT Implant Dentistry is one of the leading experts in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. Whether you have been wearing dentures for years or are looking for full smile rehabilitation, the advanced skills of our certified implant specialists can give you the smile of your dreams.

If you are considering replacing an entire arch of teeth, you have several great options to consider. Traditional dentures have been a common form of full arch tooth replacement for a long time. Because of advances in dental technology, however, newer and more permanent solutions are now available because of advances in implant techniques. A consultation with the implant experts at ARCHPOINT can help you decide which option is best for you and your lifestyle. Especially if you’re considering upgrading to snap-on dentures from a traditional “plate.”

A Little About Traditional Dentures

If an entire arch of teeth is missing or needs to be replaced, traditional dentures provide an easy, inexpensive option. Once teeth are removed, no additional surgeries are required and you can enjoy the benefits of your custom-fit denture right away. Made of a durable acrylic material, a traditional denture is shaped to fit either the roof of your mouth or along your lower jaw bone ridge line. An upper denture utilizes suction in the roof of your mouth to stay in place, while a lower denture uses the muscles of your tongue, lips, and cheeks to help it fit securely.

The most common drawback with traditional dentures is that over time, your denture will not fit as well as it once did and can become uncomfortable. This is because of the resorption of bone and gingival tissue over time after teeth are removed. While denture adhesives work well, they are messy. Frequent denture relines are necessary to maintain proper fit.

Because your denture rests on the gingival tissue, your bite strength is limited. You may experience difficulty biting into and chewing certain foods. While traditional dentures are a great, inexpensive way to replace your teeth, there are other options to consider as well, such as an overdenture or “snap-on denture.”

A Snap-On Denture May Be Your Best Choice

Similar to traditional dentures, a snap-on denture is made of high quality acrylic material. Often called an overdenture, they are removable appliances that replace an entire arch of teeth. The difference with snap-on dentures that sets them apart from traditional dentures is that they are designed to fit onto strategically placed implants, keeping them in place.

In most cases, two to four surgically placed implants are anchored to your jawbone. Your custom-made acrylic denture is designed to snap onto the implants. Snap-on dentures can be easily taken out to clean, but are secure when clipped into place, so you won’t have to worry about them throughout the day.

Advantages Of Snap-On Denture Designs

There are many advantages to wearing a snap-on denture. Since typically only 2-4 implants are utilized, snap-on dentures can be much more cost-effective than replacing each of your individual teeth with their own dental implant. Although initial costs may be higher than traditional dentures, denture relines are typically not needed, which reduces added costs.

Surgically placed dental implants are anchored into the bone, giving your overdenture a strong foundation to grip onto. Implants serve as artificial tooth roots and successfully maintain bone tissue and prevent the resorption of both the bone and gingival tissues. Without the concern over bone shrinking, you can rest assured your overdenture will always fit and will not come loose when biting or chewing. There is no need for messy adhesives or frequent visits for relines.

Dental implants also provide just as much bite strength as natural teeth. With snap-on dentures, you can enjoy most of the foods that you love and may not have eaten in years. Implants anchor your denture in place, eliminating any friction that can cause painful mouth sores.

The custom-designed shape of snap-on dentures allows you to speak more clearly. While traditional dentures have a plate that rests on the roof of your mouth, the streamlined shape of overdentures is less invasive to your mouth. As such, your tongue can move more freely so there is less of an impact on your speech.

Snap-on dentures are easily removed whenever it’s time to sleep or clean them. Simply take out your snap-on denture to brush it after each meal. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and soft bristle toothbrush to prevent small scratches and soak it daily in a denture cleaner. Just like teeth, your dental implants need to be brushed at least two times daily. The use of a non-alcoholic mouth rinse is also recommended. When implants are not properly cared for, gingival inflammation can occur, leading to periodontal disease and implant failure. Frequent preventative care appointments, including X-rays and professional cleaning, are recommended every six months.

While snap-on dentures provide a much more stable, permanent solution to tooth loss, you may want to consider an option that is not removable. Taking your over-denture out to sleep and clean may be great for many people but not of interest to you. There is a tooth replacement option that is permanently fixed to dental implants: All-on-4 or All-on-6.

All-On-4 Dental Implant System

Similar to snap-on dentures, the use of the All-On-4 system utilizes dental implants to support an acrylic “U” shaped denture that rests on top of dental implants. Four surgically placed titanium implants are strategically placed into the strongest areas of bone tissue. Your denture is then designed to permanently attach to each of those implants. There is no taking your denture out to sleep or clean it, so no one will ever see you without your teeth. With the All-On-4 dental implant system, you can enjoy even more strength and stability as well as eat and speak with confidence. Bone tissue health is easily preserved with the use of more implants.

Cleaning your All-On-4 implant system is easy: brush just like you did with your natural teeth using non-abrasive toothpaste. Then clean around your implants with dental floss and/or a water flosser to prevent inflammation in the gums around them. Frequent preventative care appointments are important to maintaining your All-On-4 system because only a dentist can remove your denture appliance for professional cleaning.

Can I Get Implants If I Already Have A Partial Denture?

can i get implants if i have a denture

The dental specialists at ARCHPOINT Implant Dentistry in Dallas and Fort Worth are experts in the field of replacing missing teeth. Whether you are missing one single tooth, or several teeth, or want to replace an ill-fitting full or partial denture, ARCHPOINT offers a customized approach to provide you with the highest quality dentistry possible.

Because of great advances in dental technology, you have more options than ever before to replace missing teeth. At one time, the most common form of replacing missing teeth was either with a full denture or a partial denture. If you have several natural teeth remaining, your dentist may suggest a partial denture that anchors to existing teeth. While both of these appliances are good forms of tooth replacement, ARCHPOINT of Dallas and Fort Worth want you to know that there are other options for your tooth replacement needs. If you are a current partial or full denture wearer, you can still enjoy the benefits of upgrading to permanent dental implants

Your Comfort Level Improved

While a partial denture is a long-lasting, cost-effective option to replace teeth, it also has its drawbacks. Even though a partial denture hooks onto existing natural teeth, most partial denture wearers will experience some form of rubbing or slipping. Friction between the denture and the tissue below can cause painful sores to develop. The clasps that anchor around your natural teeth often need to be adjusted to maintain a tight fit and can easily break if accidentally dropped.

With dental implants, you can easily replace a single tooth, or multiple teeth, eliminating the need for a removable appliance. Bridges can be supported by implants as well as implant-retained dentures to replace an entire arch of teeth. Dental implants provide stable support with titanium posts anchored into the jaw bone. Replacement teeth are permanently fixed on top of the implants, so there will be no more sores and no need to use messy adhesives.

Never Be Without Your Teeth Again

Replacing your missing teeth with dental implants is a permanent solution to tooth loss. There are no appliances to take out to sleep or clean allowing you to enjoy life just as you did with your natural teeth. Laugh as much as you like without the worry of your appliance moving and never be caught without your teeth when unexpected visitors arrive!

Improved Appearance

Today’s full and partial dentures are now designed to look and feel more natural. While these improvements give a more realistic appearance, oftentimes they will still be noticeable to someone standing close to you. In some cases, a metal framework is utilized to give the appliance more strength.  With large metal clasps, a partial denture can be very noticeable.

Eliminating the need for a partial denture with the placement of dental implants will give you the most natural appearance possible. Individual implant crowns look and feel like natural teeth. They are able to be flossed and fit snugly within the gum tissue. When multiple teeth are replaced utilizing an implant supported bridge or implant supported denture, you can expect a beautiful, more natural appearance without the use of any metal clasps.

Better Strength and Stability

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jaw bone and then permanently fuse to the bone tissue. Titanium implant posts act as your new tooth roots providing a strong support system. With dental implants, you can expect to have much more bite strength and stability than with partial dentures. Which partial dentures, hard, crunchy and sticky foods are nearly impossible to eat. Biting into apples or corn on the cob can cause a partial denture to slip or pop out of place. Sticky foods can cause your partial to come loose, completely putting you in an uncomfortable position. Enjoying a steak is often difficult because of limitations due to the design of your partial denture.

You can expect the strength of dental implants to be just as strong as natural teeth since they are permanently fused into the bone tissue. Because ARCHPOINT uses the highest quality titanium implants for their DFW patients, your bite and chewing capability can be fully restored. You can enjoy all the foods you once loved to eat with your natural teeth. Including being able to easily bite into crunchy, chewy, and sticky foods without the hassle of a partial denture.

Improved Oral Health

Resorption of the bone tissue begins immediately once teeth are removed from the jaw bone. Although this process is very slow, over time, loss of bone tissue will cause your full or partial denture to begin to feel loose. Denture relines, adjustments, and the use of messy adhesives are a hassle many patients do not want to have. When our jawbone shrinks, it becomes thin and brittle, which puts older patients at risk for fracture if they were to fall. Since dental implants are anchored into the bone tissue like roots of teeth, bone tissue resorption is prevented

Loose, ill-fitting full and partial dentures often cause painful sores to appear on your gum tissue. These sores make wearing your appliance difficult and uncomfortable. Bacteria can easily harbor under your appliance, causing odor and bacteria to rest on the gum tissue. Chronic inflammation of the gum tissue will eventually lead to gum disease putting your existing teeth at risk for tooth loss. Upgrading by replacing missing teeth with dental implants will preserve bone tissue, and reduce your risk for inflammation and gum disease.

what are all-on-6 dental implants

What Are All-on-6 Dental Implants (and How Do They Differ From All-on-4?)

what are all-on-6 dental implants

The implant specialists of ARCHPOINT in Dallas and Fort Worth understand that your mouth and dental needs are unique to you. That’s why our highly skilled dentists take the time to carefully design your treatment plan custom to suit your needs perfectly. From single-tooth implants, to snap-on dentures to the All-on-4 and All-on-6 dental implant systems, The collective expertise of ARCHPOINT specialists can design the perfect smile for you!

Whether you are replacing an entire arch of teeth or upgrading from ill-fitting dentures, the All-on-4 or All-on-6 dental implants are two of the best solutions available. With both of these systems, a custom-designed “U” shaped prosthesis is permanently attached to either 4 or 6 surgically placed implants. Since your prosthesis is shaped to fit the curve of your mouth, there is no thick plate across the roof of your mouth (palate.) With both the All-on-4 and All-on-6 systems, you will enjoy the highest level of both comfort and function.

What is the Difference in All-on-4 and All-on-6 Dental Implants?

Based on the same concept of the All-on-4, the All-on-6 dental implant system is recommended for patients missing an entire arch of teeth. Six surgically placed implants are anchored into specific areas of your upper or lower jaw. These implants are placed strategically where the bone volume is at its highest and densest. Having six implants helps to maximize bone potential giving you the most stable support and offering a long-term alternative to traditional dentures. Both the All-on-4 and the All-on-6 system are as close as you can get to having your natural teeth back again.

Who Is A Candidate for All-on-6 Dental Implants?

Because the All-on-6 dental implant system uses two additional implants, it is important they receive enough support from your surrounding bone. When teeth are removed, the remaining bone tissue begins to resorb. Over time, your jawbone shrinks and can become brittle and may not be suitable for an implant. With the use of bone grafting, our specialists at ARCHPOINT can rebuild bone tissue to provide more support to allow implant placement. The All-on-6 dental implant system is typically best suited for those DFW patients that do not require bone grafting. The implant experts of ARCHPOINT in Dallas and Fort Worth will conduct a thorough examination including X-rays and scans to assess the bone structure and the extent of bone loss.

Your medical history as well as current medications can also affect whether you are a good candidate for All-on-6 implant tooth replacement. Several medications and certain systemic diseases such as cancer can affect the how the implants fuse to the bone tissue. You can expect our specialists to discuss your treatment options and cater your treatment plans to best suit your needs.

Benefits of All-on-4 and All-on-6 Dental Implants

Lower Cost Than Single Tooth Implants

By utilizing the strength of 4 or 6 implants, your fixed denture prosthesis will provide just as much strength as replacing each tooth individually.

Quick Recovery

Fewer implants mean quicker and more comfortable healing. With both the All-on-4 and All-on-6 systems you will leave with a temporary denture to allow your implants to fully fuse to the bone. You will then receive your permanent prosthesis a few months later.

No Food Restrictions

Your fixed prosthesis will be capable of withstanding heavy bite forces. You can expect to bite and chew just as easily as with natural teeth. And because your prosthesis is permanently fixed, there is no need to worry about it popping out or rocking while you eat.

Speak More Clearly

The streamlined “U” shape of your All-on-4 or All-on-6 implant prosthesis will look and feel like natural teeth. By eliminating the bulky plate that rests in the roof of your mouth, you will be able to speak more clearly and never risk your denture slipping when you talk.

Custom Designed Appearance

Our experts at ARCHPOINT will customize the design of your prosthesis to look and feel natural. You can enjoy the beautiful, white new smile that you always desired.

Your Denture is Fixed In Place, There’s No Removing It

Unlike traditional dentures or snap-on dentures, your prosthesis is permanently fixed to your implants. There is no taking them out at night and no need for messy adhesives. You can go about your day with confidence.

Easy Home Maintenance

Just like natural teeth, your home care is important to prevent implant failure. Brushing twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste and the use of floss or a water flosser is recommended to effectively remove plaque and bacteria that builds up around your implants. Frequent preventative care visits will ensure your implants stay healthy.

Restore Bone Volume For A More Youthful Appearance

The placement of implants into the jawbone stops the resorption caused by missing teeth. Volume to the lips and face is restored giving you a more youthful and confident appearance.

Completely Restore Your Smile

All-on-4 and All-on-6 dental implant systems are the preferred choice for DFW patients needing to replace all of their missing teeth at one time. Both are permanent solutions to traditional or snap-on dentures.

teeth in a day

Why You Don’t Want Same Day Implants

teeth in a day

Do you want same day dental implants in Dallas or Ft. Worth? Have you heard about things like “teeth in a day,” where you can get an entire full mouth tooth replacement in just one dental appointment? Tread cautiously before you invest in something that seems like it’s too good to be true.

The truth is, there are many misconceptions and untold truths about same day dental implants. It isn’t physically possible to take something that normally requires a matter of months and rush through it in one visit and still expect the same results.

Can you replace all your missing teeth in a day? Yes. But you won’t have a permanent prosthesis like an All-on-4 on the same date as your implant installation. There’s still a matter of integration and healing you need to allow for.

Same Day Implants vs. Temporary Healing Appliances

Each dental implant must have adequate time to integrate with your jaw for at least 3-4 months after it’s installed. Integration occurs when the implant is placed inside the bone and new bone cells grow and fuse around it. Your implant will become a permanent part of your mouth once it’s fully integrated. But if biting pressure is applied to it on the same day, the implant will likely fail.

This is where special considerations are made regarding teeth in a day. Let’s suppose you have your dental implants placed and an appliance attached at the same time. Yes, you will be able to have new teeth within a matter of hours, but not quite in the way you might have thought.

The same-day dental appliance you receive on the date of your implant installation is actually what we call a healing prosthesis or interim restoration. It will be worn over your dental implants for 3-4 months or longer until each of your implants is fully integrated with the bone.

A temporary healing prosthesis allows you to smile confidently and enjoy your meals while your implants are integrating. Your immediate appliance will only be worn for a brief time and is made of less durable materials, such as acrylic. These devices don’t last nearly as long as zirconia implants, as they’re only for short-term use.

People who get same day implants may later learn they’re stuck with an interim restoration or have hidden costs associated with a permanent prosthesis several months down the road. If it sounds too good to be true, start asking questions.

Why is a Final Hybrid Prosthesis Required?

The contours and curves of your bone and gums will change slightly during the healing and integration process of your new dental implants. These changes can and will cause fit problems with your healing appliance. But that’s completely normal! Since we replace it with the permanent version after integration is complete, the fit won’t be a permanent concern.

When you get dental implants at ARCHPOINT, you won’t leave our DFW office with visibly missing teeth while your implants integrate. Even if the permanent version of your smile isn’t installed yet, you will always have something temporarily there to see, smile, and eat with.

For your permanent implant restoration, we prefer to use a durable, higher-quality material that is both strong and attractive. Zirconia is the best choice in most scenarios. Zirconia is very durable and attractive, making it ideal for single, multiple, or full-arch tooth replacement (including All-on-4 dental implants.) However, it shouldn’t be installed on the same date as your dental implant surgery. Otherwise, you’re setting yourself up for unnecessary costs and re-treatments. We’ll wait until your implants are stable before installing the zirconia appliances on top of them.

When the acrylic healing prosthesis is replaced with the permanent zirconia one, you have much more freedom to design the “perfect” smile. Such as the size and color of each tooth, the contour of your biting edges, and how they complement your smile as a whole. And they’ll be just as strong as you need to enjoy all of your favorite foods. You could say once the process is complete, it’s like having a brand-new, natural smile all over again. But it takes time, and the process can’t be rushed!

Choosing a Dental Implant Office

Many dentists claim to offer teeth in a day or same day implants. But in the majority of these situations, the dentists only offer temporary healing prostheses made of acrylic. They may not disclose the fact that your restoration will need to be replaced or updated within the next few months after your surgery. Before committing to anything as dramatic or life-changing as All-on-4 implants, you need to be fully informed of the process from start to finish.

Seasoned implant specialists like the team at ARCHPOINT help expedite your implant treatment by having our own in-house laboratory. This allows us to design, create, and deliver permanent zirconia restorations for our clients. With a customized smile design process, you benefit from more reliable restorations, better aesthetics, and a perfectly fitting final prosthesis. Plus, we involve you in each step of the design process so that your new smile is tailored to your vision and preferences.

“Can You Get Same Day Implants?”

Depending on how you look at it, yes you can get some type of “teeth in a day,” but no, they aren’t permanent. Rushing through the process and placing permanent zirconia or ceramic crowns and bridges on top of brand new dental implants is dangerous, not to mention an unwise way to spend your money. It’s smarter to get a temporary yet durable interim appliance (like one made out of acrylic, similar to a traditional denture) and then change it out once your bone is fully integrated.

The point is, you’ll never have to be seen with visibly missing teeth. But the “teeth” you get on the same date as your dental implant treatment are simply there for a short time. The final versions will be created for optimal aesthetics and functionality, giving you the permanent smile you really want.

dental implant strength

Why Durable, Lightweight Materials are Important for Implants

dental implant strength

When you’re restoring a full, complete set of missing teeth, you may not give a lot of thought to the density or weight of the materials that your dentist is using. But the weight of your appliance—whether it’s dentures or dental implants—can factor into your everyday comfort, eating, and speaking abilities.

Durable Zirconia vs. Other Dental Implant Materials

Zirconia is an extremely strong, durable, and biocompatible material that we prefer to use in dental implant cases whenever possible. But you might see some other dental providers talking about things like nanoceramics, which tend to be even lighter than zirconia dental implants. The theory behind the nanoceramics is that they are practically invincible, to the point you can drop them off of buildings or run over them with cars.

In reality, the difference between zirconia and nanoceramics is only a few ounces. For example, if you had dental fillings in every tooth, there would still be a weight difference, but you really wouldn’t notice it. The same can be said for nanoceramics vs. zirconia.

The overall shape of zirconia dental implants tends to be much more streamlined than something like a nanoceramic overdenture or hybrid arch. That means when you’re eating, you still have the full strength of a complete set of teeth, even though the entire arch is replaced with an implant prosthesis.

Is Zirconia Durable Enough to Eat With?

Yes, biting pressure is some of the strongest muscular forces you have in your body, but it’s still no match for zirconia implant restorations. Zirconia also offers what we call a “flexural strength,” which is how much biting pressure you can apply to your implants before they have the potential to break. Zirconia offers the best flexural strength of any other restorative material, including things like nanoceramics and acrylic (which you frequently see used in dentures or partials.)

As an implant patient, you’ll notice a huge improvement if you’re upgrading from something like acrylic dentures to an All-on-4 appliance, for example. Dentures don’t offer nearly as much flexibility when it comes to biting pressure and chewing forces, so naturally, you’re more likely to eat softer, processed foods or need to cut your meals up into smaller bites.

On the flip side, zirconia dental implant restorations are almost exactly like having anatomical teeth to eat with. That means you can bite directly into a steak, corn on the cob, or even chew a piece of sugar-free gum if you want to. The flexural strength is so durable that you won’t have to think twice about your meal selection. In fact, a fully integrated dental implant is physically stronger than any other tooth in your mouth, which is why we can pair fewer implants together to replace multiple teeth at one time.

Yes, there are other materials out there that can also provide full chewing abilities. But the reliability and aesthetic enhancements you gain with a material like zirconia make them the prime choice for full smile restoration.

Aesthetics of Lightweight Zirconia Materials

For years, dental experts have worked in labs to create materials that are both durable enough for restoring teeth and attractive enough to look like the real thing. Today, dentists are able to use everything from acrylic and plastics to porcelains and 3D-printed teeth (well, crowns, at least.)

If you ever look at your teeth extremely close up, you’ll notice that your tooth enamel has a small amount of transparency to it. This creates fluctuations in the color of the tooth, starting at the edge of the gum tissues down to the biting edges of the tooth. With certain ceramic materials, you get more of a solid opaque color across the entire crown. This can cause the tooth or implant restoration to stand out from other teeth or look unnatural in some circumstances. Whereas with zirconia, you gain some of that translucency back, making the end results look as natural as possible.

Plus, you get to select the color and hue of your new smile. Essentially, you’re getting a complete smile makeover any time you invest in full-arch rehabilitation with All-on-4 or a fixed bridge system.

Details Matter

At ARCHPOINT, we believe that zirconia materials allow us to provide the most reliable results in the most functional and attractive manner possible. During your initial dental implant consultation, we’ll sit together one-on-one to discuss what your concerns are, answer every question you have about the process, and discuss which options are available to meet your goals. If you have pictures or examples of smiles that you like, feel free to share them with us!

To make things even better, we offer flexible financing that fits your budget. Payment plans can even complement any existing dental insurance or HSA/FSA funds you have, minimizing your overall investment. Every treatment plan is detailed and broken down, making it easy for you to understand with or without any insurance coverage.

As we plan your smile rejuvenation, every detail is carefully planned out. Including the shape and contour of each tooth, the exact color of materials used, and the way the teeth align with your facial profile. So, at the same time, you’re essentially getting restored fullness in your jawline, cheeks, and lips.

Which Dental Implants are Right for Me?

Some dental offices only offer one or two types of dental implant treatments because that’s what they’re trained in or limited to providing. But implant therapy isn’t a cookie-cutter treatment where one procedure fits every smile. At ARCHPOINT, our DFW specialists are experts when it comes to implant therapy and smile reconstruction. Since we specialize in dental implants, we have numerous pieces of technology and resources that you won’t find in everyday general practice. That means we can better curate a unique care plan for your smile, regardless of what it’s been through!

Just because you have missing teeth doesn’t mean you won’t be able to smile again. Call the implant specialists at ARCHPOINT to learn more about zirconia lightweight dental implants, All-on-4 treatments, and more!

DFW smile design

Design Your New Smile With DFW Dental Implants

DFW smile design

Dental implants are used to support replacement teeth and improve the appearance of your smile by replacing one, several, or all of your teeth at one time. But did you know that you can actually design your new smile? Many dental implant patients think they’re stuck with whatever the dentist gives them, but this isn’t necessarily true; with dental implants, you have more control over the aesthetic outcome than you think!

Let’s take a look at how you can use dental implants to create your own unique smile and feel confident about the way you look.

A Smile Full of Straight Teeth

Implants can make your smile whiter, straighter, fuller, and younger-looking. If you had crooked teeth in the past, dental implants will make your smile straight. No braces are necessary! This can give you a more confident look and make your smile easier to care for in general.

The shape of your implant restoration, such as a multi-tooth dental bridge or a fixed “All-on-4” appliance, will be contoured to the anatomy of your jaw and facial profile. This allows our DFW implant dentists to install a prosthesis that straightens your smile and is 100% functional. The overall alignment of your implants will give you naturally straighter looking teeth, but no braces are needed.

Whiter Teeth Across Your Smile

The dark pigmentation on some people’s teeth may not even respond to whitening gels because of internal discoloration. Over time, these stains become ingrained in tooth enamel, so they’re very difficult to remove even with regular cleanings and great oral hygiene.

For someone who has dealt with severe dental staining or discoloration because of diseased, dying, or decaying teeth, dental implants can be a great way to brighten up your smile. The fixed prosthesis on top of your restoration is shaded according to your personal preferences, allowing you to achieve the brightest white possible, or more of a natural hue if that’s what you like. Plus, any implants that are placed directly next to your other healthy teeth will be matched in such a way that you won’t be able to distinguish which teeth are “real” or not.

Regain Self-Confidence With a New Smile

Missing teeth can make you feel embarrassed and not want to go out in public. Things like parties, work lunches, or even smiling around your family may cause you to feel self-conscious or hesitant about interacting with other people. Not to mention avoid having your picture taken. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that their self-consciousness can inadvertently make them seem shy, uninterested, or even off-putting to the people around them (even if that’s not truly the way you feel!)

With implants, your new smile will change your life. When you have healthy and attractive teeth, it instantly makes you feel like the confident person you deserve to be. In fact, it’s not uncommon for ARCHPOINT dentists to see our clients have tears of joy streaming down their cheeks when they finally get to see their new smile for the first time. It’s a truly life-changing experience!

Investing in dental implants means you’ll be able to eat better and have a healthier lifestyle without the restrictions of trying to hide your missing teeth. This proven procedure will change your life for the better.

Types of Implants

Whether you’ve had a single tooth knocked out, currently wear a partial denture, or need to replace all of your teeth, there’s a dental implant option for every person. Our implant specialists will talk with you about the best dental implant option for your smile. That way, we can help make sure you get the perfect outcome that matches your facial features!

For example, you might only need one or two single-tooth dental implants installed alongside other healthy teeth in your mouth. We’ll want those restorations to mirror the shape and color of surrounding tooth structures so that they blend in and make your smile look whole.

On the other hand, you may be weighing your options between a snap-on overdenture and All-on-4 implants. If that’s the case, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each one, such as affordability and non-removable features, to help you understand what you’ll achieve from your investment.

Choosing an Implant Dentist

How do you pick which implant dentist is best to restore your smile? First, be sure to review their education and training. Every dentist will have completed four years of dental school, but specialists go on to complete an additional 2-3 years of advanced training in oral surgery, periodontics, prosthodontics, or something related to oral rehabilitation.

As a specialist, your implant dentist will likely have at least three years or more of experience with placing implants. You’ll want to find out which type of implant systems your specialist offers, such as traditional designs, zygomatic implants, mini implants, overdentures, All-on-4, etc. The more diverse the experience of your dentist is the wider variety of options you’ll have for designing your new smile.

And don’t forget to ask about sedation. Will dental sedation options be available during your procedure? If so, do you have a preference as to the level of sedation that’s offered? Some offices may only provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas) but if you want to feel like you’re napping or tuning everything out, something a bit stronger will be ideal.

Be Realistic About Your Smile Treatment Timeframe

A dental implant takes approximately six months to integrate after the installation process. Your dentist will want to monitor it as it heals and the bone fuses around the implant to anchor it into place.  Rushing through the process and immediately placing “same day implants” can jeopardize the success of your new “tooth” and even cause it to fail. On the other hand, wearing a temporary prosthesis over the implant as it heals will fill in missing teeth until the permanent restoration can be fixed on top of your integrated implant.

Traditional vs. Zygomatic Dental Implants

traditional vs zygomatic implants

DFW dental implants are a great option for people who suffer from missing teeth. Whether teeth are lost due to poor home care, accident, illness or other factors, replacing these teeth are crucial to maintaining your overall health. Thankfully, because of advances in dental implant technology, a full arch of teeth can be replaced without the worry of having ill-fitting, uncomfortable dentures.

The certified implant dentists of ARCHPOINT utilize their expertise training and over 75 years of combined experience in the Dallas and Fort Worth area to give you the best dental implant outcome possible.

Benefits of Getting Dental Implants:

When teeth are removed, the jaw bone immediately begins to resorb (shrink.) Although the process of resorption is slow, over time this can cause dentures to not fit properly, causing painful sores and preventing you from eating many foods. The thinning of bone tissue also creates a higher risk of fracture to the jaw bone.

Surgically placed implants serve to preserve the bone tissue by acting as the roots of implant supported crowns, bridges or dentures. Dentures supported by implants will look and feel more natural and allow you to restore the full ability to eat the foods you love without the worry of your denture slipping or the need for use of adhesives.

Different Types of Implants Designs

When it comes to getting dental implants, you have options to choose from. The expert team of oral surgeons and prosthodontists of ARCHPOINT can help you find the right option to meet your unique needs and provide the most state of the art dental implant technologies to ensure the best outcome possible. The implant specialists of ARCHPOINT of Dallas and Fort Worth can give you the smile of your dreams.

Traditional Implants in Dallas and Fort Worth

Traditional implants are the most commonly used implant design to replace missing teeth. They’ve been in use since the late 1960’s.  The implant specialists of ARCHPOINT are experts at placing traditional implants to give you the smile you always wanted. This type of implant can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or an entire arch of teeth.

A traditional implant is a screw like post made of the highest quality titanium that is surgically placed into the bone structure and allowed to heal for about 3 months. Once the implant is fully integrated into the bone, a custom made crown is then placed onto the implant, resulting in a natural looking and feeling replacement tooth that is able to withstand heavy bite forces.

With the use of implant retained dentures or the innovative All-on-4 system, an entire arch of teeth can be replaced with the use of as few as four implants.

As with any surgical dental procedure, not all individuals are candidates for traditional implants. A substantial amount of bone tissue is required to support a traditional implant. Oftentimes, when teeth have been missing a long time and bone resorption has occurred, bone-grafting is necessary. This is an additional procedure that will increase not only the cost of replacing the teeth but also the total amount of time to complete treatment. Bone grafts can take up to 3-6 months to fully heal prior to implant placement.

A sinus lift is also a common procedure necessary before the placement of implants. The sinus cavity is located just above the maxillary bone of the upper jaw. When the maxillary bone resorbs, the sinus cavity often widens into that space. If an implant is placed without the proper amount of bone tissue, the sinus can be intruded upon which can complications including sinusitis and failure of the implant.

Thankfully, there’s a solution for people who don’t qualify for traditional implants because of bone loss.

Zygomatic Implants at ARCHPOINT

Because of the amount of bone tissue and bone mass needed to successfully place traditional implants, some patients are just not good candidates for that treatment. In the past, these patients either went without implants or suffered with ill-fitting dentures.

Zygomatic implants were developed in the late 1990’s and provide an alternative for patients that are not candidates for traditional implants. The implant specialists of ARCHPOINT have undergone specialized training and are able to provide replacement teeth to more people than ever before, thanks to these unique implant designs.

The term zygomatic refers to the zygoma bone, also known as your cheekbone. Zygomatic implants are anchored into the cheekbone rather than the jaw bone. Because the cheekbone is utilized, these implants are only available for replacing teeth in the upper jaw (maxilla.) The zygoma bone structure is much denser and does not resorb due to missing teeth, making it a perfect to solution to thinning jaw bone.

Zygomatic implants are significantly longer and are often placed at more of an angle than traditional implants making them very strong. These implants can be utilized to support a single tooth replacement crown, multiple tooth bridges or an entire arch of teeth. Zygomatic implants can also be used in combination with traditional implants depending on a patients unique needs.

Because zygomatic implants are placed into the cheekbone, the need for additional procedures like bone grafts or sinus lifts can often be eliminated. Without the need for these additional procedures, patients can receive their implants and replace missing teeth much sooner and treatment costs are often more conservative.

Caring for Traditional or Zygomatic Implants

Both traditional and zygomatic implants have high success rates close to 98% and can last decades.  It is the responsibility of each patient however, to follow their doctor’s recommendation to properly care for their implants to ensure they last a lifetime. Good home care such as daily brushing and flossing are necessary. Smoking can interfere with the fusion of the implant into the bone and should always be avoided. Frequent preventative appointments for professional cleanings and exams will ensure that your implants, bone and gum tissue stay healthy and last a lifetime.

are implants better than teeth

Why are Dental Implants Almost Better Than Real Teeth?

are dental implants better than real teeth

Dental implants are an incredible advancement in technology that can replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth. They look and feel more like natural teeth than traditional dentures or bridges, and they remain stable in your mouth throughout the course of your life. Dental implants can restore confidence in your smile and make it possible to eat just about anything you want without worrying about dentures slipping about or having to cut your meals up into smaller bites. If you’re considering dental implants as a way to replace missing teeth, or wonder if you need to have teeth removed altogether (to replace them with implants) there are several reasons why implants are almost better than real teeth!

The Design Behind Dental Implants

Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants are made to resemble real teeth. Not only do they look natural, but they are also the only tooth replacement that functions like independent tooth structures. They stand independently of any other tooth structures in your mouth, making them completely non-invasive to healthy teeth. The implant serves as the “root” of your new tooth, whereas a custom restoration placed on top of the implant restores the visible and functional portion you see above the gumline.

With dental implants, you will be able to bite and chew just as you would if you had natural teeth. You won’t have to worry about altering your diet or even the way you talk.

Your body recognizes dental implants as a “natural” part of your smile. When they’re installed, the bone around the surface of the implant fuses the restoration into place. Nothing other than your jaw is needed to support your new tooth. Whereas other types of restorations like bridges or partial dentures rely on other teeth to hold them in place.

Dental Implants Compared to Natural Teeth

When you look at dental implants and anatomical teeth, there aren’t too many differences. Dental implants are crafted from titanium, an extremely durable material, and tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the entire human body. Both can be used to eat normally, assuming the tooth is healthy. Both support healthy bone density around them, reducing premature aging in your facial profile. Both are attractive when you smile, especially because dental implants can be crafted to look however you want them to look.

Dental implants are the next best option when you don’t have any remaining natural teeth.

Implants are Stronger Than Healthy Teeth

One dental implant can support the biting pressure of multiple teeth.  Dental implants are more resilient to wear and tear than real teeth because they don’t have as many soft tissues that decay or weaken over time. Because the titanium in the dental implant is physically stronger than teeth are, as few as 4-6 implants can be used at a time to support a full-arch dental prosthesis. That means if you have 14 teeth missing in your upper jaw, only 4-6 implants can anchor the permanent hybrid appliance that rebuilds the entire upper portion of your smile. Having fewer implants than teeth will not in any way alter your chewing or biting abilities.

No More Cavities

Teeth that have been replaced with dental implants cannot get cavities. If you’ve been plagued by chronic tooth decay and have teeth that are non-restorable, dental implants are an excellent solution.  Implants do not require fillings and each one is topped off with a ceramic crown or similar “tooth” replacement over your gum tissues. Plus, implants come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors to help you get a smile that reflects your style.

All of that being said, it’s still important to brush and floss your dental implants daily. Even though implants can’t get cavities, they are still susceptible to gum infections. For example, if you develop peri-implantitis (the implant form of gum disease) it can cause the implant to come loose and fall out of your mouth. So you still need to incorporate a good flossing routine and brush everything twice a day.

Fewer Implants for Full Mouth Restoration

Implants can replace a full arch of teeth with just four or six implants. Implant-supported restorations like “All-on-4”, “All-on-6”, and even implant stabilized overdentures won’t shift or fall out of your mouth like traditional dentures. As few as four implants total will predictably and permanently replace all of the teeth in your jaw, thanks to their strength and predictability. You don’t need to pay for a dental implant in each location where there’s a missing tooth. That’s just one of many reasons why implants are the most cost-effective option for anyone restoring their smile.

A Lifelong Tooth Replacement

The permanence of implants is one of the biggest reasons why they’re the best solution for anyone with missing teeth. Their success rate alone is higher than any other modern restoration. It’s estimated that 98% of dental implants last for life, assuming you care for them properly. That means it’s typically a one-time investment and you’re done. Unlike having to update and replace bridges, partials, or dentures every so many years.

Implants are Just as Easy to Care For

Just like your other teeth, you need to take care of dental implants by brushing twice a day and flossing them daily. Although they won’t get cavities, they can fall victim to gum disease if you don’t floss and brush thoroughly every day. It’s important to maintain proper oral hygiene habits to avoid pain or infection. No special tools are needed unless you have a full-arch prosthesis (such as an All-on-4.) In that case, having a water flosser or proxy-brush will easily clean hard-to-reach spaces.

Should You Remove Your Teeth to Get Dental Implants?

If you are considering getting implants, it is important to know that a tooth extraction is your last resort. If possible, it is best to keep natural teeth whenever you can. That may mean periodontal therapy, endodontic treatment, or a full coverage crown over your damaged tooth. But if you do have severely diseased teeth that are non-restorable, removing them is best to establish a healthy oral environment. And in those situations, dental implants allow for much better functionality than dentures because they function like independent tooth structures.

overdentures vs. all-on-4

Overdentures and All-on-4: Can’t Decide Between the Two? Here’s What You Need to Know

can't decide between overdentures or all-on-4?

If you’re looking to replace missing teeth, there are two main alternatives to traditional dentures: implant-stabilized overdentures (also called “snap-on” or “clip-in” dentures) and All-on-4 dental implants. Both of these approaches involve placing dental implants in your mouth, but that’s where the similarity stops. Here’s what you need to know about each of these approaches to tooth replacement so you can make an informed decision about your own treatment plan.

Overview: Two Types of Tooth Replacement

When it comes to a snap-on overdenture, the principle behind this solution is simple: snap-on dentures fit over your gums (assuming all teeth in that arch are missing) and attach on top of dental implants to keep them in place. Anywhere between 2-4 implants are usually used. The restoration looks like a traditional denture, except there are special “locators” under the base. Each of these locators has a corresponding dental implant inside of your mouth, which it attaches onto whenever you put it into place. And as you might guess, snap-on overdentures are still removable. You won’t sleep in them at night and you need to take them out to clean them properly.

All-on-4 dental implants are permanent. There’s nothing to remove or snap into place. Once they’re there, they’re there for good. The hybrid device is more streamlined in shape, so you get a more discreet and comfortable prosthesis that follows the contour of your jaw. Plus, an All-on-4 is more cost-effective than placing a dental implant in every single location of each missing tooth.

Removable vs. Non-Removable: Which Option is Better for Me?

There are several advantages to a snap-on overdenture, including: reduced irritation to your gum tissues and better stability whenever you’re talking or eating. Most patients also report that their bite feels more secure after getting an overdenture compared to when they wore dentures. But overdentures are meant to remove, so if you have any reason why that might not be right for you, All-on-4 treatments are a better choice.

Removable overdentures are also more affordable to get into than a permanent hybrid treatment. Some of our patients use them as a step-up from conventional dentures even if they plan to get All-on-4 treatment sometime in the future.

When you’re looking for permanent replacement teeth that you never have to take out and probably never have to update, then All-on-4 is by far the best choice. You won’t have to worry about any embarrassing situations where other people see you with your teeth out at night. And they’ll never slip or rub when you’re talking or eating. It’s like restoring your full oral function back to what it was with a full set of healthy teeth. Whereas overdentures have a slightly reduced biting and chewing function when you compare them to All-on-4.

Do I Qualify for All-on-4 Dental Implants?

Dental implants will be an attractive option for you if you’re missing all your teeth or want to replace your conventional dentures. But not everyone qualifies for dental implants due to their health, bone loss, medications, or other factors. In fact, rushing into full-arch implant treatment without the right exam and medical clearance could set your investment up for failure if it’s performed by an inexperienced provider.

At ARCHPOINT, our dental implant team is made up of specialists who are experts in oral rehabilitation and dental implant installation. Even if you’ve been told that dental implants aren’t an option for you in the past, that might not be the case if you’re working with a specialist. For instance, if you require bone grafting or a sinus lift, we can incorporate that into your care plan where a traditional dental office doesn’t have the resources to do so.

All-on-4 implant candidates are typically missing all of their teeth already, currently wear dentures, or need to have their remaining teeth removed for some reason. They also have areas of dense bone, where the dental implants need to be installed. Even with bone loss, Zygomatic dental implants can still make this treatment accessible. Our specialists will also review your medical history and any medications you’re taking, to ensure nothing is going to interfere with the integration of your new implants.

When Overdentures Might Be a Good Idea

Overdentures are a good choice for certain people. Usually, when you understand the difference between dentures, overdentures, and All-on-4, you typically have a good idea of whether or not snap-on dentures are your best choice. An overdenture is more affordable initially than going straight into a permanent hybrid appliance, making it a popular option for people who may not want to invest as much into their smile reconstruction. For others, they’re an interim solution before they’re ready to finally upgrade to something more permanent.

If you struggle with loose or uncomfortable dentures, an overdenture is a practical solution. Especially since as little as two dental implants can be used for support.

Can I Retrofit My Current Denture?

Dentures can sometimes be retrofitted to snap onto dental implants. But not always. Usually retrofitting a denture is only possible if the prosthesis is still fairly new and in good condition. Much of it will depend on the depth of the “plate” and where the implants can be installed in your mouth. You’re essentially wanting to see whether the stars align, so to speak. If you’re considering having your denture adjusted or retrofitted into an overdenture, be sure to bring it with you to your appointment at ARCHPOINT.

Benefits of Overdentures vs. All-on-4

At the end of the day, what matters most is how comfortable you are with your dentures and if you want them to be permanent vs. more affordable. Both overdentures and All-on-4 can provide good results. However, overdentures are more affordable than All-on-4 implant systems, making them easier for some people to get into if they require full-arch reconstruction on a tighter budget. But if you want a permanent solution that feels closer to natural teeth, then All-on-4 implants are probably the best option for you.

am I too old for dental implants?

How Old is Too Old for Dental Implants?

If you’re looking into getting dental implants, you might have wondered how old is too old for dental implants? There are many myths surrounding age and implants, some of which have no basis and others that have more truth to them than you might think. We’ll break down the truth behind the myths of age and dental implants so that you can make the most informed decision possible when it comes to your oral health.

Age Is Just a Number, Right?

Let’s set the record straight, age has nothing to do with dental implant treatment. That is, assuming that you’re old enough that your mouth is fully developed (we don’t place dental implants in children.) The truth is, people are living longer than they have in years and to stay healthy, we need teeth to eat with.

You’re not too old to get dental implants. Braces are a perfect example. More adults are getting braces today than ever before because they have better access to orthodontic treatment. Maybe their parents couldn’t afford braces when they were growing up and now that they’re fiscally independent, they can invest in treatment for themselves. It’s not uncommon to see people get braces in their 40s, 50s, or even their 60s. Dental implants aren’t all that different!

The Misconception That You’re Going to Lose All of Your Teeth

There is a common misconception that tooth loss is a natural result of aging. But that’s not true. Just because your parents may have gotten dentures at a young age doesn’t mean you will. At ARCHPOINT we encourage our patients to retain their natural teeth whenever possible. But if they have certain non-restorable teeth that need to be removed, or multiple teeth already missing, dental implants are the next best solution.

As we age, dental implants allow us to eat nutritious foods that we need for a healthy, functional immune system. Investing in replacing missing teeth, including getting dental implants, can help you stay healthier, longer. All the while, your dental implants can help preserve the adjacent teeth since they are non-invasive to other tooth structures. And we need that even more the older we get.

Are Dentures the Only Option If I Have Bad Teeth?

Dentures are a traditional tooth replacement that has been used not just for decades, but centuries. Partial dentures included. But today there are more options than ever when it comes to replacing missing teeth for functional purposes.

For example, dental implants can be used for single teeth, multiple-tooth dental bridges, clip-on overdentures, or even full-arch All-on-4 hybrid appliances. Dental implants improve chewing and speaking, decrease oral complications, and even help a person’s smile look better. You’re never too old to benefit from improved oral function, regardless of how many teeth are missing.

The Minimally-Invasive Design of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a minimally invasive procedure that is also safe for other teeth. The implant itself can usually be placed in a discreet surgical procedure using only local anesthetic (although sedation may be preferred if you’re getting multiple dental implants.) The conservative design of the implant and how it fits in the jaw also reduces discomfort and improves recovery after your surgery.

As an added bonus, dental implants are non-invasive to adjacent teeth. No healthy tooth structures need to be “ground down” or “reshaped” to create room for the implant, as you would see with a bridge or possibly even a partial denture.

Because dental implant surgery is minimal and straightforward, being older doesn’t typically prohibit you from requesting this type of treatment. That being said, if you’re on blood thinners or have recently had a joint replaced, among other things, you might still need a medical clearance from your physician. That’s something our ARCHPOINT implant dentists are happy to speak with you about.

Age and Bone Loss: How it Impacts Implant Placement

It’s easy to be confused by age and bone loss, but it doesn’t necessarily have an impact on your dental implant placement. Does aging cause bone loss in your jaws? Not necessarily. Healthy bone density in your jaws can remain fairly consistent as we age, depending on a few factors, including any medications that you’re taking. But there is one major thing to keep in mind. The longer you go with missing teeth, the more bone loss you’ll have in your jaws. And the more bone loss there is, the more challenging it can be to install dental implants.

That’s where working with a specialist comes into play. When you have an implant expert performing your procedure, you have access to a wider variety of treatment techniques. For example, switching out traditional implants with Zygomatic dental implants or mini dental implants. Or adding bone grafting and a sinus lift into your care plan. Whatever is needed to create the right foundation for your dental implants, the ARCHPOINT team of specialists can help make that possible.

The Longer You Wear Dentures…

Wearing dentures will take a toll on your jaw bone as the years go by. Long-term denture wear leads to continual pressure on your jaw, which then triggers bone loss. Your jaw bone, which is an important aspect of supporting your dentures, will shrink and become thinner over time the longer you go with missing teeth. And it can be amplified due to being in a continuous state of compression and tissue loss, especially if you ever make the mistake of sleeping in your dentures.  Once your jawbone gets too thin, the more difficult it becomes to place any type of dental implant.

Is it Too Late to Get Dental Implants?

Even if you have thin bones, already show signs of bone loss, or are over the age of 60, you shouldn’t rule out dental implant treatment in DFW. The specialists at ARCHPOINT will gladly present you with all of your options and recommend the healthiest, safest treatment choices that fit your smile and lifestyle.
